앎의 시작은 무엇일까? 그건 바로 자신이 무지하다는 사실을 깨닫는 것이다. ‘지우헌’, 고 신영복 교수가 지은 이 이름에는 ‘어리석음을 깨닫는 집’이라는 의미가 담겨 있다. 더욱 알아가는(知尤) 공간으로도 해석할 수 있는 이곳은 콘텐츠 미디어 기업 디자인하우스가 운영하는 북촌의 전시 공간이다. 북촌 한옥마을의 호젓한 기운이 서린 이곳은 한옥을 현대적으로 개조한 것이 특징. 연꽃 열매를 모티브로
한 천장과 한옥의 목재 기둥, 화이트 큐브 전시장이 한데 어우러진 독특한 내부 구조가 인상적이다. 이 외에도 흙 표면에 월석을 박은 담벼락과 조경, 구름 문양을 더한 합각 박공지붕 등 장인의 세심한 손길이 닿은 외관도 주목할 만하다.

주로 현대미술 전시를 진행하는데, 지난해부터는 2명의 창작자를 조합해 시너지를 내는 2인전을 기획하고 있다. 미디어 아티스트 김태윤과 예술가 백현진, 회화 작가 윤석원과 설치 작업 및 퍼포먼스를 선보이는 박현성, 음악가 겸 회화 작가 김윤기와 프로그래밍과 디자인을 넘나드는 민구홍 등 영역을 초월한 예술가들의 만남으로 예상치 못한 결과물을 선보이며 큰 호응을 얻었다. 한편 김혜주, 헬렌 코흐Helene Koch 등 신진 작가 발굴에도 힘쓰며 국내 예술 신에 새로운 활력을 불어넣고 있다.

Overview

What marks the beginning of knowledge? It starts with recognizing one’s ignorance. The name Jiwooheon, given by the late Professor Shin Young-bok, means “a house for realizing one’s folly.” This space, located in Bukchon and operated by the content media company Design House, can also be interpreted as a place for “deepening understanding.” Nestled in the serene Bukchon Hanok Village, Jiwooheon is a hanok (traditional Korean house) modernized for contemporary use. Inside, the lotus seed-inspired ceiling, wooden hanok pillars, and white-cube gallery space create a distinctive architectural blend. The exterior features a wall with embedded moonstone, landscaping, and a cloud-patterned gable roof—all crafted with meticulous attention to detail by artisans.

Focusing on contemporary art, the gallery has recently started curating two-artist-collaboration exhibitions to foster synergy between creators. Recent pairings have included media artist Kim Tai-yun with artist Baek Hyeon-jin, painter Yoon Suk-one with installation artist and performer Park Hyun-sung, and musician and painter Kim Yoon-gi with multidisciplinary artist working in programming and design Min Gu-hong. These cross-disciplinary collaborations have produced unexpected and highly praised results. In addition, Jiwooheon actively supports emerging talents, like Kim Hye-joo and Helene Koch, bringing new energy to the Korean art scene.
